Last Saturday I was able to celebrate Sweet Money's 30th birthday with about 11 other people. Her BFF and I helped put together dinner at her house and throw a mini dinner party. Nina helped us as well and with our combined efforts the birthday girl was smiling and having a really great time all night long. Which is the point, right? She is a very sweet person (hence part of her nickname) and has always been a great friend to us over the last 10 years or so. She deserved a little special treatment.
After dinner at the house and a birthday shot for the road, we piled into the limo and headed out to a couple of spots in Hollywood and L.A. Our first stop was Opera...which we didn't actually get in to. Yeah, it was comedy people. Let's just say that our grouping of people was not ideal for the trendy L.A. crowd (read: trashy/half naked/young/hot) required to get in without a wait. A long wait. I wish I had my camera out to take pics of the "ladies" in the crowd. Wow.
One girl that sticks out in my mind in particular was wearing a completely see-through black dress with black boy shorts underneath. Um...the shorts were too small. And so was the dress. Frightfully small. It was sheer hilarity (pun intended) to watch her strut through the parking lot to her car and stumble in the heels she was teetering on. It was too much. We had to move on or risk wasting a big part of our night being herded in line along with everyone else who had to wait. So much for the guest list!
Our next stop was Edison. Cool, lounge-y, and calm. There was an older crowd of people that didn't seem so pretentious and self important there. The inside was really nicely decorated and I could see myself hanging out there with friends. I know the Monkey has been there for happy hour and our visit furthered my desire to have dinner there some night. Great spot. I even got hit on! Yay for me. Boo for him. He was a good sport about it all when I showed him my rings...still a gentleman and wished us all a good night.
The birthday girl got bored quickly and wanted to move on to some place that had dancing. Since she'd been drinking in the limo (and at the house) she was noticeably louder than the rest of the patrons and was "cut off" (twice!) before ever approaching the bar. Yikes. I'm sure that had something to do with our rapid departure.
We were off in the limo again and headed down the street to Elevate at 811 Wilshire Blvd. We had no problem getting in and didn't have to pay. A far cry different than our reception at Opera. We spent the rest of the night dancing and having a good time. At 2 AM we piled back into the limo and headed back to the house. Thanks to the stupid time change I didn't get home until 4 AM. It was really 3 AM to me, but you know it messed with me for a few days. I guess that means I'm old. Ha!
So there you have it. Saturday the 8th was a busy but fun day and looking back on it brings me a smile. The birthday girl was surrounded by her best friends, drunker, and happy by the end of the night. Exactly where and what she wanted to be. I'll take that bit o' sunshine for now. ;)

I still haven't been to Elevate. I've only eaten at Takami, its sister sushi place. :)
