Boy genius?

Dictionary.com defines genius as: an exceptional natural capacity of intellect, especially as shown in creative and original work in science, art, music, etc. I know that as one of the requirements for being designated as a genius you have to score over 140 on an I.Q. test. Technically my kid hasn't hasn't done that, but he did come home with a pretty kick ass testing summary yesterday. I guess that means he's just my little genius.

Each year (beginning with the 4th grade) Lil' Man takes the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) to asses his level of understanding in Reading and Math. He usually does well if he's actually paying attention. That part is a crap shoot since he suffers from irritable lazy boy syndrome. *rolling eyes* It's somewhat of an adventure to find out whether or not he did his homework each day and to see his test scores on the simplest of subjects. I digress.

Yesterday he came home and brought us his results. Apparently "his reading skills are comparable to those of an average eighth grader after the sixth month of the school year" and "his math skills are comparable to those of an average eleventh grader after the six month of the school year". Seriously? Holy crap! That's pretty good. He did well on last year's test, but this year stands out in my mind as exceedingly better.

Over the summer Hubbs and I had Lil' Man do workbooks for reading and math so he wouldn't forget things and to also strengthen his weaknesses in comprehension and fractions. We did this during this last summer and the one before. There were some things in the workbooks he wasn't familiar with but we had him work on that stuff anyway. I'm glad we did. Now they're suggesting he begin Algebra 1 curriculum and read a variety of books in his level. I'm going to go ahead and give ourselves 10 cool points for keeping him on it during the summer and challenging him. ;)

So there you have it. He may not technically be a boy genius, but I sure as hell am a proud mama. Now, if I can only get him to use his powers for good instead of evil...

Yay! If the cut-off is just at 140, we are all geniuses, your son included.

That's so great!!! He should be in the Gate program...that'll really keep in on his toes. You can suggest he be tested for next school year :) More work for you, but in the long run, it may be better for him so he doesn't get bored with school. Congrats on being an awesome mom...though I always things this :)
