This is very hard for me. Talking about the crappy stuff that goes on when you're raising kids isn't what parents want to share. They want to talk about the cool birthday trips and cupcakes they made that kick the other snacks' asses. We want to talk about how well they are doing in school and think about all the really great things we have in mind for them when they grow up. That's what parents want to do. They want to go to sleep at night and know that despite set backs here and there, everything is as it should be. I want to.
Unfortunately, raising kids is not always about cute outfits and class parties. It's not only about signing up for basketball and what's for Christmas. Sometimes its about bad grades or lying and sometimes its about things more serious. I made a promise to be honest with my topics on this blog and tell things from my perspective. I guess that means even the stuff that I'm not always excited to talk about. Who knows, maybe someone will learn from my battles and it'll better prepare them for parenthood. I know I wish I was better prepared sometimes.
So let's get to it. I won't give you all the gory details, but I'll give you the gist of things. My darling fruit of my loins is fucking up. Big time. He's recently seen fit to steal, lie, and forge my husband's signature on an incident report for something that happened at school last week which I just found out about today (unrelated to the stealing and lying previously mentioned). Of course he's trying to lie his way out of the forgery, but its blatant and obvious that he did it. And sadly for my so
n, we were not born on Planet Idiot and recently sent to Earth to parent the Most Brilliant Child In All of Existence. Apparently my book smart son is the stupidest kid on Earth. At this rate he'll be the smartest damned kid in his cell block. Maybe I'm exaggerating and maybe I'm not. All of his offenses are pretty serious to me and I tend to take these things to their extreme and attempt to nip it in the bud. When a kid is messing up everyone looks to the parents. It's their fault, right? I mean they teach their kid the lessons of life and show them how to be successful. They are charged with producing decent human beings that go forth and prosper building
from their solid foundation provided in a loving environment. That's their job. And when they fail at it, the results are obvious in the child's behavior and eventual success or lack thereof. So who do you blame when the parent or parents have done all that? Where do you point the finger when the kid has been taught the difference between right and wrong, good and bad, lies and truth, and consistently applied the theory that there are consequences for their actions? There are no drugs, no alcoholism, no abuse or neglect of any kind in the home. There is plenty of hugging and open communication--I love yous are plentiful. All the stuff you think makes for a stable environment is present and accounted for...so WTF? What makes this little shit think it's OK to pull the crap he's pulling? I just don't get it. I'm not necessarily opening myself up to be analyzed, but I want those who don't really know me that well to understand that I really am a decent parent as far as parents go. I'm not perfect, but I'm a far cry from crazy or ill fit so all of this is very consternating to me.

We try so hard and put so much time into doing right by him and for him. We're in touch with his teachers, I am always at his school plays and performances, we try to keep him involved in sports and positive activities, we praise his good work and show him how to do better on his not so good work...the list goes on and on. Stuff like this is very depressing. And frustrating. I can't help but ask myself "Where did I go wrong?". He doesn't even see or spend time with SD but he's acting like him in so many ways. It makes my stomach hurt.
Raising kids isn't always fun, but I hope the universe sees it fit to make it worth it at the end of it all. I'm going to crack open one of those new bottles of wine I just bought tonight after dinner. I'm going to deal with Lil' Man, put him to bed, watch The Office for some laughs, and drink. It ain't pretty folks, but it's life.

Man, kids really know how to kick you in the penis, huh!
I think the kid's almost (or at) middle school age, right? I was a pretty major fuck-up around that time, but I think I grew up to be a solid citizen, so don't get too frustrated yet :) At that age, the brain chemistry is just all wacky and there's really no accounting for the seriously poor decision-making (except to say that I've previously read that the decision-making portion of the brain is underdeveloped before about 20 years old), so it's not a reflection on you so much as nature :)
*hugs*
mmm...wine + the office sound good right about now, if i make it home in time for the office.
you are a great mom, just from reading what you wrote. i don't fully appreciate parenthood yet, but i hear you on the frustrations (one reason we're delaying it awhile).
when i royally effed up a few times, my mom would scream, "what did i do wrong? i provide everything...i try so hard..." along the lines of what you wrote, but in a much more scarring, less constructive, anger-fueled, much less articulate way. i never knew what to say then. i still don't know the answer. i hold that nature does rear its ugly head regardless of nurture, and that people are inherently not-so-good, but all that's totally debatable and not scientifically proven in any way.
hmm...totally unhelpful comment. all i can say is hang in there. mom is one of the toughest jobs in the world, and it's ones like you that make me feel like perhaps one day, i too will be strong enough to attempt it.
Oh, R, I'm so sorry. :-(
In my teacher studies I learned the same thing as Trisha...that part of the brain just isn't fully developed at this age. They just don't get that there are consequences to their actions.
Not that this piece of trivia at all excuses his behavior, it might explain it a little bit.
Good luck with all of this!
Boo. :(
my heart goes out to you. seriously. i know you are a great mom, not just from this post, but from other things we've talked about and sometimes no matter what mom does, the kid is just going to do what they want to... regardless of consequences.
i can't imagine how frustrating this all is, but know that by really trying to nip it in the bud now, you are likely stemming future bouts of crazy.
sounds like wine and the office is definitely what you need tonight.
{{hugs}}
I hate responding to this post, because what do I know about kids right? But it seems to me that you ARE doing the right thing. You don't have a bad kid, you have a kid that made some bad choices. People blame the parents when they don't behave like you are, when they don't punish the kid, when they let the kid think this behavior is okay because they don't want the kid to be mad at them.
It's much better for him to learn the consequences at home than later on in life when he's robbing liquor stores (not that I think he's headed down that path). There will be many more Halloweens in your future.
And like everyone else has already said - this foreshadows NOTHING. I can't post Mr. Kate's history on a public message board, but when we get together next I will fill you in on some delightful stories. And as for me? My nickname in college was Klepto Kate after some of the shenanigans I revealed from my elementary school years.
I know you are a fabulous mom, so please know that I'm sending you lots of hugs and bottles o' vino!
i have a similar situation with someone in my family that i haven't written about on my blog. i dont' have children but i sure know what you're saying here. it's heartbreaking. i know you feel at fault, but when you're feeling bad, invoke this jeff foxworthy joke, which i'm going to paraphrase. "just once i'd like to see some person on oprah saying, 'mom was great, dad was great, i'm just a sh*thead.' " it makes me giggle every time. say it with a horrible southern accent. it is the age he's at. hang in there.
My mom was a really good mom but I still effed up a few times when I was a kid. It's just part of growing up I guess. Don't be too hard on yourself.
[hugs]
You are such an incredible mother and from what I read, it sounds like you handled the situation perfectly. Giving Lil' Man the consequence of no Halloween sounds like the right thing to do, despite it totally sucking for you since you look forward to all the events that go with the holiday. You're doing everything right...working with his school, giving consequences, standing firm. He's lucky to have you, although I have a feeling he feels otherwise at this moment :) I can't imagine how hard being a parent is. Thanks for being so open and honest with everything. Us non-parents are learning from you.
blogging is the perfect way to vent that sort of frustration.. I'm not a parent- but remembering slightly what that age was like,I think a lot of kids try to push the limits with lying, etc. At least its just Halloween thats canceled- cos Thanksgiving is way too delish. Plus the less candy around the better!!
as the others have said, you're a fantastic mom. i think you're doing a great job, and having spent time with you and li'l man and hubs this weekend, it sure doesn't seem like he's holding it against you :)
Oh sigh... You are a wonderful parent. You can hear it in the way you right, in how involved you are in your son's life. You know -- kids make mistakes -- and it is up to the parents to help them find their way. I am sure you are doing that, and it is really the best you can do. Keep your head up, and pour yourself another. You're right, it's life. Hugs.
R, I am so sorry you are going through all this. You are a wonderful parent, and I'm sure your lil' man is just in a funky stage that he will grow out of after some love and discipline from his folks. Hang in there, my dear. I think you're wonderful.
R, it breaks me to hear how frustrated you are. I wish I could tell you a solution but I know nothing about children other than giving them candy. I know that you're doing a wonderful job and you do a lot of fabulous things. I guess right now Lil Man is just learning between right and wrong w/ consequences.
Keep it up. you're doing a good job.
I am so glad I've started reading your blog. I am definitely going to go back and read the older entries after this one.
I have nothing to add except that after reading about your son the past couple of months, it's clear you are doing great parental things by him.
