Water Works

Among all of the good stuff that went on this past weekend was some bad. On Saturday I went to the marathon baby shower with Lil' Man in tow and Hubbs stayed home for some "me" time. I was probably at the location of the shower for about 20 minutes helping to decorate when someone finds me and tells me I have a phone call. Really? Who would call me here? (We were at the family's restaurant). I get to the phone to find out it is Hubbs.

H: "We have a problem"

R: "Great. What?"

H: "The washing machine is overflowing and it has leaked through the floor to the apartment beneath us."

R: "What the hell?! Did you call the Management Company's emergency line? What did they say?"

H:"Yeah. They said they can't come fix it until Monday. There is only one guy working today and they'll send him over to try and stop the water whenever he gets back. Oh, and what should I do with all the clothes in the washer? The load wasn't finished and the clothes are still in there with the bleach."

What follows is the rest of the conversation that neither Hubbs or I am very proud of. (Mostly me.) Let's just say that I was stressed and hating that I couldn't do anything from an hour away, he was on edge from earlier in the day and overwhelmed with everything, and this was not a sunshine producing situation. It escalated, exploded, and finally subsided.

The maintenance guy on duty came over (after his lunch was over), did what he could to suck up the water out of the carpet and see what was wrong with the washer. Just prior to his arrival Hubbs had transported the clothes from the washer to the bath tub so he could soak the bleach out of the clothes. Well...the maintenance guy showed up during this process and wound up needing Hubbs' assistance. Subsequently our clothes sat for too many hours in bleach-y water and were basically ruined. Dudes all of our underwear, socks, and white shirts had to be thrown out. Tell me that wasn't awesome news to come home to. :/ Thankfully Hubbs was forward thinking and made a Target run for a few essentials to get us through. Cool points for him.

Fast forward to today.

The toilet in Lil' Man's bathroom overflowed for no good reason. I have my suspicions as to why it did, but can't confirm anything. (And no, it had not been used.) Regardless, we were looking at yet another water related mess. Fantastic. :/ Here's the kicker...Hubbs had put in a work order request with the building about a week ago because that same toilet wouldn't stop running. [Catch it! I know, I know-bad joke] He turned off the water and we waited for Mr. Maintenance to show up and fix it. He never showed and now this. Of course following the washer incident, which by the way still has not been fixed, this did not make me a happy camper this morning.

What followed was a conversation between me and the Management Company's answering machine that I may be very proud of. ;) Hopefully they get it fixed ASAP and we can be done with our watery woes.

This happened to us once! Our washing machine leaked water, and it went down three floors! Luckily, there wasn't much damage to other people's property, but it was still a PITA problem.

[I-the property manager to the rescue]

First of all, ask to have your main lines snaked in the unit. After time (and not necessarily of no fault of your own) the drain lines in your apartment can become clogged and will back up. This may be the reason your washer machine started spit water out (the water had no where to go). The same could be true for the toilet in little man's bathroom. If the water is stopped up in the washroom and the pipes boarder the bathroom in any way (either back-to-back; top-to-bottom, etc.) this would cause his lines to back up and then emit through the toilet.

Simple fix. If management does not want to "pay" to have it done, it's about a $40-60 charge to have your lines snaked. Let the plumber know they'll need a 25-50 foot snake.
