Soul Sistah

As I mentioned yesterday, I had dinner with my friend J last night. The place is called Larkin's and is located in Los Angeles/Eagle Rock. It's a house turned restaurant and recently opened on the corner of Loleta and Colorado Blvd. It's homey and comfortable inside with mismatched chairs, wooden tables, and a steady stream of jazzy-blues music playing in the background. The parking lot is very, very small so be aware of this if you decide to check it out. Also, heads up on the heating situation. I guess when the owners were putting this quaint little spot together they opted out on the heating. Well, as the waitress said, it's an old drafty house and heat is a good idea. Thankfully the Central Air Guys were coming by next week to begin working on that problem. Thank you Larkin's...my cold, frozen feet thank you!

Before heading out I checked the website to see what I'd be in store for and to try and decide what I'd be eating.

You see, food makes me happy. I get a little excited when I know I'm going to eat good food. I think my love for food is what causes me problems when it comes to ordering. It takes me forever to decided on what I want because I always want more than one thing. I generally narrow down my options between two things and wait until the last minute to actually decide. When the moment arrives and the wait-person takes my order I fold up the menu and pass it along to him or her. Within about 5 seconds I regret what I ordered and inevitably decide (sometimes silently and sometimes not) I should have gone with my other choice. Menu checking is just a part of the process that helps me pick something faster and gets me looking forward to the food. Shut up. Don't judge.

Anyway, in true R fashion I narrowed it down to two things thanks to my friend The Internet. I didn't realize, until I got there, that I'd narrowed it down from the lunch menu. Which was, of course, no longer available during our dinner time. Hmph.

We started off by sharing the Alaska Crab Cakes and I ordered a Root Beer.

I don't know why, but I think it's fun that it looks like regular beer in the bottle. I know, it doesn't take much.

I narrowed it down again (between the fried chicken and the catfish in case you care) and finally ordered the catfish by default. They didn't have any chicken breasts available for the Good Ole' Fried Chicken meal so Catfish and spicy greens it was! J ordered the Jambalya. Sorry, there is no picture of the Jambalaya...I didn't get a chance to sneak a pic of her food.

We both decided to splurge and ordered dessert to share. We had Strawberry Short Red Velvet Cake and the special which was a lemon tart with a cherry sauce reduction. Both were yummy but I think our favorite was the SSRVC. The whipped cream was home made and it tasted so smooth and yummy. The lemon tart thing looks gross, but I swear it was still tasty.

Lastly, here is a picture of my sweet friend J.

Everything was pretty good and the service was quick and friendly. I would definitely go back again and this time I'd want to go for lunch. I want the Hot Link Corn Dog and Fried Mac N Cheese balls. Anyone wanna come?

J is a cutie-patootie-pie.
The food looks good, and you're not alone when it comes to making decisions on what to order... I do the same thing. Luckily I can almost always talk OG Clif into my "other" choice, and therefore end up with the best of both worlds.
