He's baaa-aaack!

Lil' Man has gone back to school and is officially a 6th grader. I took him this morning and walked over to the board (where all the class assignments are posted) so we could find out where he'll be procrastinating this years' projects and assignments and who I'll have to e-mail regularly to make sure he's staying in line. He also checked to see if his new BFF would be in the same class. No such luck. Sorry pal. But he's next door and there's always recess and lunch to hang out so you guys should be fine. And his parents have invited you over after school some times to do homework and have dinner. It'll be OK.

I waited to meet the teacher and shake her hand while introducing my rug rat. Luckily he was already placed in the front row, center seat so I didn't have to request he be moved up. That is either a) a happy coincidence or b) she's heard about him from last year. :/ I'm hoping it's the former, but my smarter side says it's the latter. Unfortunately, Lil' Man was not on his best behavior at the beginning of last year. Fortunately, he was able to turn it around full circle by the second half. *Crossing my fingers for this year to start off smoothly*

I looked around at the kids starting the new year and took note of the lack of First Day of School attire. You know, new clothes and new shoes. Shiny new notebooks and the latest character backpacks. Strange...when I was going to school it was like a frickin' fashion show the first day and sneakers were so white you could damage your retina if looked at them from the wrong angel. Times have changed, but I'm not that old. Wonder what the deal is.

There was something else I noticed, and briefly discussed with Parents of New BFF, while loitering the hallway. That would be the 6th grade girls. They seem so much...older than the 6th grade boys and older than the 5th grade girls. Some of the clothes they were wearing, make-up, accessorizing, general demeanor...yeah, I think I might be in trouble.

It's already been established that Lil' Man has had interest in the female species. In fact, he was brave enough to write the Do You Like Me Check The Yes, No, or Maybe Box note and gave it to Very Tall Girl at the end of last year. She checked 'No' but Lil' Man was OK with that. He said at least he wouldn't have to wonder all summer whether or not she liked him and now he could move on next year.

Oh geez. He's already making plans to 'move on' and one of these girls is probably going to be a target. Fantastic. I'm going to try and play it cool, but this adds a whole new level of stuff to watch out for. Lovely.

I'm going to be teaching 6th grade this year. 6th grade in Long Beach is considered middle school, but nonetheless, I'm used to the little ones so I'm a little nervous but also very excited. Good luck with your lil' man!! Girls...wow, yes, they grow up WAY too fast these days! Loved the check box notes as a kid...funny!

Ahhh, the check box note!!!

I remember being around that age and the more advanced girls wearing the clothes and makeup and stuff. It's a competition for females already at 11 or 12 years old.

BTW, weird about the lack of new school clothes! I still do that to this day going back into teaching. I also put on a face full of makeup. This lasts approximately one week and I'm back to being lazy.
